The reinforced soil techniques of in-situ and backfill soils and rock is a relatively ancient process. Mechanically stabilized earth retaining systems originated from techniques such as crib walls, first built centuries ago in the Austrian Alps, and multi-anchored walls, such as the “Ladder wall”, invented in France by A. Coyne in 1926.

The concept of reinforced soil as a construction material was first introduced in the early 1960’s by the French engineer Henri Vidal, with the invention of the Reinforced Earth technique. The Reinforced Earth (R.E.) technique combines horizontal metal strips with suitable granular backfill and prefabricated concrete facing panels, which are attached to the strips. The R.E. technique was originally employed in France in 1968 for the construction of a highway retaining wall in Incarville. Two large research projects on Reinforced Earth , including reduced scale models and full scale experiments, were performed in Europe from 1967 to 1977. This led to the publication of the first design methods and specifications for Reinforced Earth in 1979, which were based on the actual behavior of the structure.

Soil nailing is an in-situ reinforcement technique in which metal inclusions are driven in the ground or placed in a predrilled borehole, which is then grouted. The facing is generally composed of shotcrete placed after each excavation phase. Soil nailing can be used for slope stabilization as well as for the construction of soil retaining structures. This technique was initially used for temporary works because of the limited research pertaining to the durability of the nails. In 1973, the first soil nailed retaining wall, using driven nails, was constructed in France for the widening of the railway line in the vicinity of Versailles. The first research project on soil nailing was performed in Germany (Stocker et al, 1979) and consisted of full scale retaining walls pushed to failure. A second manor research project entitled “Clouterre” was performed in France between 1986 and 1990 and resulted in the publication of State of Practice recommendations for soil nailing.
