[chyba "passs"].

Most subjects are offered from Grades 1–8 and have three standards of pass: a straight pass, a pass with merit and a pass with distinction.

The difference between a pass, merit and distinction?
A "pass" is simply acknowledging that you possess knowledge enough to be graded acceptable and move on.
A "merit" shows that you put forth more effort and were more prominent than other students in a class.
A "distinction" is basically an honor that shows that you went above and beyond the call of duty (so to speak) and succeeded where few others have.
