A similar effect is seen with 3BAl, in this case after 2 hours the grain size could not be measured due to the presence of feather crystals. Results for 6TiAl are not shown because all samples showed feather crystals.

The aluminum alloy ingots cast without grain refiner often exhibit a fan-shaped columnar structure, referred to as “feather crystals” (Ref4). This structure, illustrated in Fig. 10, may be found in low- and high-solute alloys. It is most likely to develop when there is a steep thermal gradient ahead of the solidifying interface (Ref5) or an inadequate addition of grain refiner (Ref10). At higher magnification, the feather crystals consist of twinned columnar grains (Fig. 11)
