For while opera was a Renaissance reconstitution of tragedy, Nietzsche argues that in contrast with tragedy, in which music and words form a totality, opera imposes a Socratic will to intelligibility on the operatic form, specifically through the stile rappresentativo, which subordinates music to verbal intelligibility. Music, the Dionysian art form par excellence, gives way to discourse.
