Texto: ...Popular at Christmas time is "lutefish", dried cod made near-gelatinous by soaking in "lye"....
- Julgo que lutefish é uma espécie de bacalhau.
- para "Lye" só encontro lixivia, o que me parece estranho mergulharem o bacalhau em lixívia!

Olá colega,

Realmente para quem não está habituado isto deve parecer-te muito estranho...mas experimenta...à moda portuguesa o bacalhau é muito bom!
Então é assim: o bacalhau é comprado seco e salgado e para se cozinhar tem que estar de molho, ou seja fica alguns dias mergulhado em água para hidratar e inchar. O resultado final é o bacalhau pronto para cozinhar (ou mesmo comer crú) e é realmente um prato tradicional do Natal (em Portugal também). No final o aspecto da água não é muito agradável, tem realmente um aspecto meio gelatinoso pois fica turva com o sal.
Sugiro a seguinte tradução:
No Natal, é muito popular o bacalhau demolhado, que se obtém mantendo o bacalhau seco alguns dias mergulhado em água.

Estou pessoalmente convencida que o bacalhau que comem na Noruega leva um tratamento diferente daquele que se come em Portugal. Mas vou simplificar e seguir a sua sugestão.
Quanto a comer bacalhau estou habituada há, mais ou menos,uns 48 anos :-)

Explanation:
"Lutefisk" is salted, dried codfish, soaked in water and lye before cooking.
The lye may be potassium carbonate, but I'm not sure.
In a radio show in the U.S., "The Prairie Home Companion", Garrison Keeler, the show's producer, tells stories about an imaginary Minnesota town called Lake Wobegon, where the children of Norwegian-American families have to eat the dreaded "lutefisk" at Christmastime, a treat for their parents but not so for their Americanized offspring.
