não diria que "principal business activity" esteja de todo incorreto. No entanto, é um termo aparentemente exclusivo da "UK Standard Industrial Classification".

Se você buscar a seguinte combinação em uma máquina de procura:

"principal business activity" cnae brazil

não obterá nenhum resultado sequer. Se tentar:

"principal activity" cnae brazil

obterá 10 ocorrências em 4 sites diferentes, o que não é de todo mau.

Se você experimentar colocar no Google:

cnae brazil industry OR industries

obterá 11.000 resultados relacionados ao *seu tema*, confirmando que "industry" é, de fato, o termo mais adequando para o seu contexto.

Um destes resultados é o site www.econ.ucsd.edu/muendler/docs/brazil/br-compadv.pdf:

traduzindo:
