Originalmente a palavra era usada para fins militares para proteção da cabeça, como uma simplificação do elmo medieval.
Com o desenvolvimento industrial e a conscientização de proteção do trabalhador usaram a mesma palavra adicionando de segurança. O uso hoje é tão frequente que chamam simplesmente de capacete.
