Static (equilibrium) headspace sampling involves equilibrating the headspace above a solid, semisolid or liquid sample, in a septum sealed vial under controlled conditions of temperature and agitation. After the required period of time needed for equilibration, a sample of the headspace is withdrawn using a gas-type syringe (or sampling loop) and injected into a Gas Chromatograph (GC, see side bar).
