The drive shaft stuffing box must be furnished with new packing cords when cords become too hard for further compression. (descprition of a Grate Adjustement hydraulic system)

A impressão que me dá do contexto é que os cordões servem para aconchegar o eixo dentro de uma caixa que o contém e que, à medida que vão perdendo flexibilidade, é preciso pôr mais. Eu sugeria esta tradução por transmitir a ideia, mas nunca tinha ouvido a expressão.
Já agora, para os colegas anteriores, em Portugal não se diz empaque, mas sim empacotamento.
