Automatic Direction Finding (ADF)

Automatic direction finding is a direct derivative of the direction finding systems used from about 1930 onwards.

It uses a principle of looking for a >null point< on a loop antenna and from there being able to distinguish the ground station location. In the early days it was the most effective navigation mechanism, but its use today is limited to a secondary or backup system. It is still very much in use on general aviation aircraft.
