OBS – punitive damages; exemplary damages; vindictive damages; aggravated damages; retributory damages. The first two terms are by far the most common in both AmE and BrE. Each one tells only half the story, for the two-pronged rationale for awarding such damages in civil cases is (1) to punish the defendant, and (2) to make an example of the defendant so as to deter others. Exemplary damages appears to be the more usual phrase in G.B. ... whereas in the U.S. the term punitive damages is slightly more frequent. These terms should be allowed to co-exist, inasmuch as neither is completely adequate to convey the intended sense. The other forms, sometimes used in strings (as in the following example), should be avoided as needless variants. "Much has been written by the courts and by text writers upon the question whether punitive, vindictive, exemplary, aggravated, or retributory damages should be allowed in any case without reaching a generally accepted conclusion." disagree  Bogdan Burghelea: termenul sursă este "exemplary OR punitive damages"

-> Pai sunt cam sinonime :) in UK se numesc exemplary, in State punitive. de aici conjunctia "or".
