În cartea mea, "house" apare cu literă mică, dar sunt mai mult ca sigură că se referă la [White] House şi deci e o greşeală de tipar (sunt o grămadă în carte.. :((). Acum... dacă în prima comparaţie găsesc că merge să traduc "care pariase regatul pe succesul operaţiunii Overlord" în cazul celei de-a doua... ezit :( "care pariase şi el Casa Albă/guvernul/preşedinţia/mandatul său/ALTFEL.. pe Overlord" ??

Poate aveţi voi idei mai bune...

Poate nu e greşeală, ci doar un fel de a spune că pariase totul, casa fiind de obicei cea mai de preţ posesiune materială a unui om obişnuit ? Aş întreba pe monolingv.

agree  Peter Shortall: I don't think the author has the White House in mind - "*also* bet the (White) House" would imply Churchill had bet the White House too (which wasn't his), and "bet the/your house" means to gamble a huge amount/everything, just as "bet the kingdom" does
