English term or phrase:T.rex
This 12 meter long and 5.6 meter high carniverous dinosaur was discovered by Barnum Brown in 1900. Its name, Tyrannosaurus rex, means tyrant lizard king and was designated by Dr. henrey Fairfield Osborn in 1905. In this exhibit you can learn more about the anatomy of Tyrannosaurus, where it was found, how it walked, and where to see it. Pictured above is a Tyrannosaurus rex eating a hadrosaur
The skull of Tyrannosaurus is about 1.6 meters (5 feet) long. Many of the large holes you see in the skull are muscle attachment points. With large muscles and large teeth, it was possible for this dinosaur to put high amounts of pressure on its victims. This means it could slice up tough skins and sizeable chunks of flesh. Where this skull is solid it is about 10 cm (4 inches) thick. Its braincase could hold the brain just larger than the size of a gorilla's. Tyrannosaurus rex's nasal cavity indicates that it had the scent tracking ability similar to that of a vulture. The lower jaw bone could seperate, like a snake, to handle large meals.Tyrannosaurus rex had up to 50 teeth in its mouth at any one time. In the front of the skull this dinosaur had "nipping" teeth. These teeth were wide and flat for scraping meet of the bone. In back of these were tweleve to thirteen teeth in its cheeks on each jaw and side. Each of these teeth were about 30 cm (1 foot) long and about as round as a typical banana. That includes an extensive root for each tooth. The wide and long dimensions of each tooth allowed for the concentration of jaw forces at the tip of each tooth. These teeth are curved like scimitars with a serrated inner edge. This would work on a meal like a dozen or so serrated steak knives. Tyrannosaurus rex was well suited to eat meat. The two claw arm of Tyrannosaurus is about a meter (3 feet) in length. Its arms could not reach its mouth. This arm has many attchment points for muscles. Although this arm is about as long as an arm of a human adult male, it was three times (15 cm or 6 inches) as thick (due to larger muscles). It has been calculated that it could houst about 180 kilograms or 400 pouns of mass with those muscles. Ths strong arm, however, only had a limited amount of movement (lateral and up and down). There have been a couple of ideas as to what the stance and walking behavior of Tyrannosaurus rex was.
Early restorations of Tyrannosaurus mounted it with this biped dragging its tail. This was partly due to the thought that it was a sluggish cold blooded lizard. Now, recent mounts of Tyrannosaurus align the tail and the body of this animal nearly horizontal to the ground. This body was suspended from its pelvis held up by two massive legs. The vertebrae and associated tissue scars indicate this is a more accurate reconstruction.
Unfortunately, only one footprint for Tyrannosaurus rex has been found (by Los Alamos, New Mexico). Thus, we can only make estimates as to how fast it walked. By extrapolating from birds, some estimate it could go up to 50 km per hour or 30 miles per hour.At the present time only 13 finds of Tyrannosaurus rex are known. All of these are in western North America. During the late Cretaceous the North American continent was divided in two by an inland seaway. Tyrannosaurus rex lived in the western portion of the continent at that time. The fossil finds of this animal are located in Alberta, Canada and Montana, Wyoming, and South Dakota in the United States of America.
