English term or phrase: Merry Christmas
Just the phrase to send a Christmas card to a Russian friend.
Michael Heskett
Russian translation:Счастливого Рождества! С Рождеством Христовым!
Explanation:
First phrase is very close to Merry Xmas, while 2nd can treated as [my/our congratulations] (with) the Christmas [day].
Other version: Веселых Рождественских праздников (which means Merry Christmas holidays), but it is slightly cumbersome.... :-)

Note that
1. In Europe and USA first comes Xmas and then New year; therefore they have almost a week of holidays.
2. In Russia things are slightly different: first comes New Year (31.12 to 01.01 in Russian version of writing dates), then we have Xmas (07.01) and afterwards so-called Old New Year (13.01) which is New year but by old Russian calendar.:-)

Merry Christmas to you as well!
Yours,
Tagir.

agree  Yuri Geifman: what you have on Jan 7 is old-style Orthodox Xmas (due to the chaos surrounding the official conversion from the Julian to the Gregorian calendar - see http://jewishwebindex.com/time_-_date.htm if you are curious about the details)
