English term or phrase: rhetorical 18-th century Swiss
Well, here is the context:more to the point, was the attitude of our intellectuals, who constituted at this time a small, militantly undistinguished minority, derectly descended in spirit if not in fact from that rhetorical 18-th century Swiss whose romantic and mystical love for humanity was magically achieved through a somewhat obsessive preocupation with himself. His passion for self-analysis flourished in our mid-century at least among the articulate few who were capable of analysing and who, in the time, like there great ancestor, chose the ear of the world for the their
confessional.
I'd be very pleased if someone let me in on the allusion. It's not a problen of translation but the one of understanding what personality stands behind it.I've got my own versions but there are not very convincing.Thank you in advance.
P.S. Before I forget it's an extract from Gore VIdal's Messiah

Russian translation:Jean Jacques Rousseau
Explanation:
The person must be Jean Jacques Rousseau, born in Geneva and known for both his eloquancy and self-studying:
"He was a keen thinker, and was equipped with the weapons of the philosophical century and with an inspiring eloquence. To these qualities were added a pronounced egotism, self-seeking, and an arrogance that led to bitter antagonism against his revolutionary views and sensitive personality, the reaction against which resulted in a growing misanthropy."
The last phrase is obviously the irony alluding to Rousseau's 'Confessions'

Жан-Жак Руссо

Explanation:
With the last phrase I, of course, meant "the ear of the world for their confessional."

Rousseau is the man

Explanation:
Below is what our LANTRA colleague says on the topic:

QUOTE
"Love of humanity", cf Le contrat social & Emile, ou de l'йducation

"obsessive preoccupation with himself", cf Les Confessions, Rкveries
d'un promeneur solitaire

"militantly undistinguished", earnt his keep by copying notes when he
could have sponged quite adequately off his wealthy patrons without
doing so.
