Right - please see below BREMYA Explanation: Yes, 'posiagnul' is rather a great sin, being treated as something done against, say, some sacred thing (though taxation is a dramatic issue in Russia). Nevertheless, to explain how deep his negative influence was, you might use either of the following: NAVOROCHAL DEL (colloquial), NALOMAL DROV (colloquial), but best of all this - SDELAVSHEGO SBORY NALOGOV TYAZHKIM BREMENEM - by analogy with the Mongolian-Tatar yoke (mongolo-tatarskoye igo). They did collected 'taxes' from Russia, remember!? |

posiagnul is correct Explanation: The Webster dictionary gives a negative connotation of the phrase "to lay inroads" in the meaning of "an injurious encroachment upon smth". In this view the translation "posiagnul na sviataya sviatykh - sbor nalogov" seems correct. Tax collection is really something that was not a very traditional thing to strictly adhere to for people in Russia (I'm from Russia myself :), so for someone to tackle upon this area it's really bordering on sacrilege :). |

нововведения Explanation: "...который внедрил свои нововведения в ...". That would be more neutral to my mind - "нововведение" may be both good and bad. Or: "...который обрушился с нововведениями...", but that would be too emotional. You may leave "посягнул" as well - it isn't negative at all, if Mr Pochinok "посягнул на" bad system. Good luck! |

Inroads Explanation: I believe that "Посягнул" is incorrect since the term "to make inroads" means "building access roads", "providing access" - i.e. the correct suggestion will use such words as "нововведения" or "выработавшего более успешный подход для сбора налогов". |

I would translate it as: "sdelal sdvigi v oblasti vzymaniya nalogov" Explanation: This translation, I think, conveys the correct meaning - it may seem negative to some and positive to others. |
