Подробно этот метод поиска рассмотрен в работе David Reeves Boggs. «Internet Broadcasting», Ph. D. Th., Stanford University, January 1982. - найти не удалось. Термин постоянно встречается в литературе, посвященной компьютерным сетям (Интернет, Manet) . Google - 22 400 результатов. Н. Малых при переводе RFC 922 использовал термин "поиск по расширяющемуся кругу".
Поскольку оригинал найти не удалось, утверждать с полной уверенностью не могу, но данный метод поиска по всей видимости является разновидностью алгоритма поиска в ширину (теория графов) или алгоритма волнового фронта. Предполагаемые варианты перевода:
1. поиск в ширину (алгоритм волнового фронта)
2. поиск по расширяющемуся кругу

The optimization AODV uses is the expanding ring search algorithm, which works as follows. The source node searches successively larger areas until the destination node is found. This is done by, for every RREQ retransmission until a route is found, incrementing the time to live (TTL) value carried in every RREQ packet, thus expanding the ``search ring'' in which the source is centered.
