agree  Denis Akulov: Имеется в виду, что они просто говорили Понт, и было понятно, что это Черное Море, а не какое-то другое; так же и с Гомером - само слово "поэт" ассоциировалось с его именем. Я бы не стал добавлять "Великий"

Какой странный текст ... Понт Эвксинский всегда был для греков далекой варварской периферией их мира. А Гомер никак не мог быть Поэтом с большой буквы в "Гомерову эпоху": если имеется в виду так называемый "Гомеровский период" ("Темные века"), то это 11 - 9 века до н.э., а Гомер скорее всего жил в 8 веке. Если же имеется в виду время жизни Гомера, то это тоже слишком рано для того, чтобы современники считали его Поэтом. "Поэтом" par excellence он становится не ранее середины 6 века, когда была записана "Илиада".
