A statute of repose is similar to a statute of limitations. The difference is that a statute of limitations defines a time period after which a person can no longer be tried for an offense, whereas a statute of repose establishes a time period after which the manufacturer of a good can no longer be held liable for the performance of a product. A statute of repose is a legal recognition that products will eventually fail to perform as well as they did when they were new, and that the owner bears the responsibility for upkeep and routine maintenance.
