PPO or ОНП Explanation: For a Russian-speaking target audience living in the US or Canada, I would suggest leaving it as PPO and providing an explanation in parentheses - Организация независимых провайдеров медицинских услуг по выбору клиента. While translating a brochure for a major Toronto hospital, I was asked to handle similar situations (i.e. abbreviations without a direct Russian equivalent) in this fashion. For a Russian audience, you may wish to render the abbreviation in Russian and provide an explanation in a footnote. |

Выбранная (избранная, предпочтительная) организация, оказывающая (медицинские) услуги. Explanation: Выбранная (избранная, предпочтительная) организация, оказывающая (медицинские) услуги. For the medical insurance system which should to be implemented in RF, the situation were to be same, e.g., a patient selects a medical organization which will provide medical care for him/her. But, in the real situation existing in RF, almost all population is assigned to so-called POLIKLINIKA (e.g., polyclinics which attend those who are sick and either give primary health care or direct to specialized clinics for non-ambulatory treatment). So, the essence of the insurance medicine (e.g., the free choice of organization which will help you to keep your health) is simply killed by the existing system. As for existing alternative medicine care (so-called paid services), the rates are so high that for a simple person it is is not too availiable. Therefore, if you are translating this for Russians in USA, you might give abbreviation and (complete English - complete Russian) in brackets. Sometime a footnote helps. Good luck! Dr. T. Организация профессиональных поставщиков медицинских слуг Explanation: "Giving customers the most for their health care dollar — that is what we're all about. For more than 60 years, Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Alabama has successfully contracted with health care providers to reduce costs, improve quality and provide the best value to our customers. As a national leader in managed care, we introduced our first physician Preferred Provider Organization (PPO), the Preferred Medical Doctor (PMD) network, in 1984. Today, Blue Cross Preferred Care has grown to become the largest network in Alabama and one of the largest preferred provider networks in the country" http://www.bcbsal.com/bcbs_aboutus.html Attraction in the abbreviature of "PRO" means the intention of PROFESSIONAL services. So I think words "selected" or "preferred" are not important here. Anyone needs PROFESSIONAl medical services, not selected according to any other criteria, subjective, by any preference etc. Serge Roshchin smarttrans.bizland.com s_roshchin@mail.ru |
