These complications include blood clots and bacterial infections which form on the surfaces of devices when they are used. An additional problem associated with the use of these devices is caused by friction. For example, catheters often need to be threaded through difficult pathways having many turns en route to the final location. This can make insertion difficult, especially when the devices are very fine and/or use very soft materials of construction. It is common practice to first insert a moderately stiff wire into the patient and then slide the catheter over the wire into position. Removal of the stiffening wire can be very difficult when the wire doesn't slide easily past the unmodified plastic catheter wall.
