AIM
The method describes the process to perform the determination of water content by Karl Fischer method in direct dosage or after desorption through an oven (Head Space).
SCOPE
The method applies to the soluble products in the prescribed solvent for the direct dosage and all the fatty acid esters for the dosage by desorption.
PRINCIPLE
The water content of sample is defined as the amount of water measured in the conditions of the method.
The value is expressed in percentage by mass.
ANALYSIS WITH TITRATOR KF V30 (METTLER) EQUIPMENT LO185 AND LO221
This equipment is intended to carry out direct dosages on the V30 volumetric titrator.
The LO185 system with a Stromboli oven is intended also to carry out dosages with thermal desorption.
Equipment
Volumetric V30 Karl Fischer titrator Mettler,
Titration cup and Mettler specific stirrer,
5 ml burette,
Stromboli oven with air pump and drying unit,
Printer.
Reagents
Hydranal composite 5 (Ref. Honeywell/Fluka 34805),
Hydranal methanol rapid (Ref. Honeywell/Fluka 37817),
Hydranal Water Standard 10.0 (Ref. Honeywell/Fluka 34849).
Method
Before all analysis, check the vials of Hydranal composite 5 and Hydranal Methanol Rapid are not empty and the vial of waste is not full.

At starting up, purge 3 times the reagent burette by rejection in the cup then empty it.

Put between 60 and 80ml of Hydranal methanol rapid in the bottom of the vat.

The determination of the concentration of Hydranal composite 5 (nominal value 5.000mg/ml) must be carried out to the implementation of a new vial and also each start of the week on the in-use vial.
