The capelin is a small fish belonging to the salmon family, and is found only in the Arctic. In summer, it grazes on the
dense swarms of plankton at the ice edge. Larger capelin also eat a great deal of krill and other crustaceans. Whales, seals, cod and seabirds all prey on capelin.
The growth of juvenile capelin is affected by various factors such as temperature and food supplies. In years when the numbers of herring in the Barents Sea are very high, herring and capelin compete for food. http://tidley.nfh.uit.no/FORKLAR/capelin.html
