People here have a point. All Kudoz questions should be given points just for the fun of it. It's like a star they give you in elementary school. To tell you the truth, I sometimes get annoyed when my answer is not chosen, and I just say it. But the asker chooses the one that's been most helpful to them and they move on with their translation, regardless of how the other answerers take it. I hope this little problem does not stop you to come back to this site.
You know, I did not intend to "talk down" to anyone and I apologize if I came across that way.
All I intended to do was to get the answer to what I thought was a relatively simple question for a friend who needed to know something for her company.
As I said earlier, I had a negative experience the one time before where I recall having asked a Kudoz question in the Spanish category. To directly address Lydia's question, it's not people's agreement or disagreement that concerns me, it's the way they treat the questioner when they disagree. As mentioned in my previous note, I was personally lambasted last time I asked a question of this nature. I do care if I am personally lambasted.
Because of that previous negative experience, which I felt had its origin in the desire for points, I decided to avoid a future negative experience by removing the issue of points, stripping the forum down to what I thought was its base intent--helping other people out so we, as translators, could create an open sense of kindhearted, generous community. Then, in return for my conscientious efforts to do this (by the removal of points), I am questioned as to why I am not awarding points. When I openly and honestly answer this question, then point out again my reasoning for my action, I am accused of "talking down" to people.
So here's where things stand: A question is still on the board regarding translation. But apparently, no one wants to help answer it because there is nothing evidentiary in it for them personally, answering my latter question, which was, why does this forum exist--to help the community or to benefit the answerers as individuals.
Answer the question. Don't answer the question. By this point, I don't care.
We are here to help each other out, but none of us have to accept being talked down to. Why should you care if some agree or disagree with the answers? By awarding points (they don't cost you anything) you get more responses and have more to choose from.
Well, if anyone knows how I can change it so that points may be awarded, I will most certainly make the effort to do so. But I must say, all this fuss simply proves my point. What do you care about the most here? Helping one another, or earning points? For example, three people have spent their time and energy to voice complaint about there being no points, but not one person has made the effort to actually help another person. Case in point.
I meant to say -- I AGREE WITH HENRY!!! It posted below Terena's comment. Terena, nobody is angry here, it's just that it's more fun when you get the points..... and yes, we are all here to help one another in good spirit like you say in your comment.
I didn't put it for points because, to be quite frank, the one other time that I remember asking a question in the Spanish category, I was lambasted for selecting an answer that some answerers did not agree with (they, of course, thought I should have selected theirs), so I thought if I put it at "not-for-points," it might take the competition out of it and make it a more open, academic forum. I thought the point of the kudoz questions were to create an open forum where translators could go if they were stumped on a phrase or a word from time to time, which is what I'm doing here. But if kudoz is not an open forum for translators to help one another in good spirit, but instead to get angry because someone else got the points or because points weren't being offered, I apologize for misunderstanding the forum's goal.
Not even any points? Advertising agencies charge bundles for designing company slogans, you might include their billing information.
