I think shallow can be used as superficial not only for people, but also for things. I like your idiom "to scratch the surface" Explanation: The Spanish idiomatic part is "la mar de ..." (not hablar en superficie), so I guess its valid to translate the first part as an idiom and simply say "scratch the surface of a profound (or serious) topic". |
