(m´n, m´n, t´kl, yfär´sn) (KEY) , in the Bible, the mysterious riddle written by a hand on the wall at Belshazzar’s feast. These Aramaic words may be translated literally as, “It has been counted and counted, weighed and divided.” Daniel interpreted this to mean that the king’s deeds had been weighed and found deficient and that his kingdom would therefore be divided.

Introduction

On the night mighty Babylon fell to the Persians, this writing appeared on the palace wall: "MENE, MENE, TEKEL, PARSIN" (Dan. 5:25), written with the finger of God. The king of Babylon was having a huge drunken party––they felt safe and secure inside the city with its massive walls. Then came the sudden appearance of the handwriting on the wall, which put an end to the party and replaced revelry with terror; and adding to their bewilderment, no one could as much as read the writing, let alone interpret what it meant!

Then the terrified king called for Daniel the prophet. By the light of a candlestick, Daniel both decoded and interpreted the writing. It foretold the immediate end of Babylon and her king. So it came to pass: On that same night the king of Babylon was slain by her Persian conquers; a new era was born.

The writing on the palace wall is comparable to the greatest Writing of all––the Bible. For like the writing on the wall, some things in the Bible are mysterious and impossible to understand apart from God’s help. Only by the light of the candlestick (that is, by the Spirit of God) can a man understand its mysteries.

Most mysteries in the Bible have already been unveiled by the apostles of the Lord Jesus Christ (Mk. 4:11; Rom. 16:25; 1Cor. 2:7; Eph. 1:9; 3:3-9; Col. 1:26-2:2; Rev. 1:20). Any further illumination of the Scriptures therefore must conform to and be built upon this finished apostolic foundation (Eph. 2:20), otherwise it is heresy.

There is one mystery expressly said to be "sealed until the time of the end" (Dan. 12:4, 9-12).

"Go your way, Daniel, because the words are closed up and sealed until the time of the end…None of the wicked will understand, but those who are wise will understand.

From the time that the daily sacrifice is abolished and the abomination that causes desolation is set up, there will be 1,290 days. Blessed is the one who waits for and reaches the end of the 1335 days" (Dan. 12:9-11).

In this book, the decoding of these and other puzzling bible numbers are detailed.{1} However, its full interpretation and actual fulfillment awaits a future day.

This final fulfillment awaits a future day because there are three stages to the detailing of this great mystery (i.e., of Dan. 12:9 etc.): These three stages are again occurring in the same order in which they did when Daniel interpreted the writing on the wall at the fall of Babylon.

First, there is the decoding of the writing itself; (i.e., understanding the function of the Bible numbers).

Secondly, there is the interpretation of that which is decoded, (i.e., the Scriptural interpretation of these numbers).

Thirdly, there is the fulfillment, (i.e., the culminated fulfillment of all things).{2}

This book unravels the first-stage of this mystery––the decoding of the numbers––with the date of the fall of Babylon, and hence, "the writing on the wall," maintaining a dominate theme throughout.

Furthermore, the second stage seems to have already begun upon completion of this first stage. The understating of the numbers is giving fresh new insight into all of the scriptures, especially the writings of the Prophets. Like lined-up dominoes, the obscure sayings of the prophets’ are leaping-forth in an endless parade of revelation.

CAPÍTULO I

EL TEXTO

El versículo

El texto en cuestión es Daniel 5:27, que dice así: "Tekel, has sido pesado en balanza y fuiste hallado falto".1 Sin duda, la forma de expresión de la Nueva Versión Internacional (NVI) expresa el versículo de una manera un poco diferente pero más parecida a las demás versiones: "Tekel, Su Majestad ha sido puesto en balanza y no pesa lo que debería pesar".

Contexto literario

El versículo en cuestión se encuentra entre una interesante situación. El Rey Belsasar, nieto de Nabucodonosor,2 había preparado un gran banquete para todos sus invitados. La borrachera generalizada de la fiesta, se volvió en una gran orgía llena de otras prácticas para nada aceptables. No conforme con esto, Belsasar decide utilizar las copas de oro del santuario judío para convidar así a sus invitados. Este fue el hecho que desató la ira de Dios. El texto dice que **una mano misteriosa colocó una inscripción sobre la pared. Esa inscripción solo pudo ser leída por Daniel, quien también da su interpretación**.
Lo escrito era "Mene, mene, Tekel, Uparsin". Daniel interpreta la enigmática inscripción, diciendo: Mene: Tu reino ha sido contado; Tekel: Pesado has sido en balanza y fuiste hallado falto; y Peres1, tu reino es dividido y entregado a los Medos y a los Persas.2

Tekel

La palabra tekel, forma parte del conjunto de la inscripción. Junto con "mene" y "peres", son traducciones de tres monedas. Mene: libra; Tekel: Onza; Peres: media libra1. Pero la palabra Tekel también significa peso.2 Sin embargo al traducir, Daniel, habla de estos términos en su forma verbal. En este caso "Él ha pesado".3

De esta forma llegamos a la conclusión de que es lo que realmente dice el texto. La discusión acerca de la verdadera interpretación del versículo, se verá en el próximo capítulo.

CAPITULO II

INTERPRETACIÓN DEL TERMINO, SU DISCUSION

En este caso hay dos corrientes principales1, de las cuales se intentará deducir alguna postura que sea la más adecuada para la posible interpretación del tema.

Primera interpretación

Esta primera postura presenta que el versículo quiere decir que el juicio de Dios vino sobre Belsasar por las malas obras que hizo. De tal forma que la balanza demostró, de forma no errónea, que el Rey había sido hallado falto ante los ojos de Dios.2 También Brown agrega a esta postura que Belsasar y su reino fueron hallados faltos de peso "demasiado ligeros", o muy pesados en la balanza del pecado (según Heb. 12:1) y sin peso en la balanza de la gloria (según 2 Cor. 4:17)1.

Segunda interpretación

Esta interpretación dice que el texto no está queriendo implicar necesariamente una forma de salvación. El Reino había llegado a su final. El Señor lo había acabado y se lo había entregado a los Medos y a los Persas. La razón que da el Señor es que fueron demasiado ligeros. No tuvieron peso, no tuvieron valor.2 La inscripción, no esta queriendo enseñar la forma de verdadera salvación. Por el contrario esta solamente queriendo demostrar porque el Señor dio por terminado al pueblo de Babilonia: porque fueron hallados faltos y "muy ligeros de peso".

Conclusión

De esta manera se llega a la conclusión que el investigador ve que hay una divergencia importante entre las dos posturas. Debido a esto, la interpretación correcta del versículo se dificulta.

CONCLUSIÓN

El investigador acepta con más confiable la postura numero dos por tres motivos concretos:

Es la más confiable, porque tiene una interpretación en base al contexto literario del asunto.
Es la más fundamentada y pensada entre los autores.
Esta postura esta a favor de la verdadera doctrina de la salvación que predica el libro completo y toda la Biblia, de que esta es por fe y no por obras. Somos salvos por el sacrificio de Jesús, no por nuestra obras meritorias. (Juan 3:16)

La relación entre muro y escritura viene de antiguo. Aunque la tradición señale a los egipcios los primeros, se considera a los persas padres de la publicidad mural; ellos preferían la letra grande y desdeñaban el papel, e inscribían leyendas en el frente de los grandes edificios y hasta en las montañas, para que estuvieran a la vista de todos.

El rey Darío mandó esculpir sobre la ladera de una gran montaña la siguiente inscripción: "Yo soy Darío, el Gran Rey, el Rey de los persas, el Rey de las provincias, el hijo de Hystaspes".

Los romanos se apropiaron de la sabiduría persa en sus anónimos paschinos, antecedente directo tanto de los actuales graffitis o grafitos y lampoons, como así también de las pintadas y afiches de propaganda.

Se decía que los hebreos, en cambio, leen la letra pequeña, por eso se especializaron en el Libro. El hecho de leer lo escrito en la pared era estrictamente para babilonios. En la Biblia aparece mencionado el ya famoso testimonio de escritura mural; se trata de la frase "Mené, mené...", de obvio interpretada como profecía desde la óptica del escriba. Judíos y musulmanes, ambos son reconocidos como "pueblos del Libro".

J. L. Borges desarrolló en un relato la relación entre la construcción de la Gran Muralla y la destrucción de los libros. Para ocultar un único hecho, la conducta reprobable de su madre, el Emperador concretó ambas desmesuradas empresas. Un lejano eco de aquel procedimiento resuena en el Romance de la caída de la Alhama, cuando Abdala, conocido como Boabdil el Chico, último rey moro de Granada, mata al mensajero y quema la carta que trae la noticia de la toma de la ciudad por los cristianos. Aquí viene a cuenta la opinión de R. W. Emerson: "Todo libro que ha sido echado a la hoguera ilumina el mundo"
"Los italianos, como las mujeres -dice Anthonny Burguess-, buscaban el verdadero sentido detras de las palabras dichas o escritas. No escribían cartas porque decían que las cartas son algo sin rostro."
