La Edad Media y Europa Occidental
Aunque a veces se usa época oscura, es menos frecuente nombrar de esta forma a la Edad Media en español que en inglés, al menos de forma clara, así que nombrar época oscura de forma aislada puede no ser tan claro como Dark Ages en inglés.
Probabemente haya que aclararlo de alguna forma, como la oscura Edad Media y Europa Occidental.

Acerca de la Edad Media

Sólo un comentario. No creo que sea adecuado traducir esto como Edad Media o Alta Edad Media, ya que la pregunta va dirigida a las épocas poco conocidas, generalmente por su antigüedad pero a veces también por fenómenos culturales, de cualquier civilización en general. La Edad Media es un periodo que se aplica a la civilización europea occidental, principalmente; ni puedes decir, por ejemplo, la Edad Media de la cultura maya o la Edad media de los sumerios, para referirte a las épocas no suficientemente conocidas o documentadas.
