English term or phrase: Touchstones
..the baroque, the revolutionary discourse, etc.
These categories provide important cultural touchstones...
Elizabeth
touchstone: punto de referencia
Explanation:
Según el viejo Simon & Schuster, touchstone tiene un sentido figurativo de criterio de prueba o examen.
Lo anterior coincide con la definición en inglés: criterion or standard by which judgment is made.
Dado el contexto (Art/literary) me parece que criterio de prueba o examen no suenan bien. Por eso propongo punto de referencia.
Otras sugerencias : medida, patrón o, simplemente, criterio.

Suerte.

=los primeros amagos culturales/los primeros toques culturales importantes

Explanation:
"the first touches of Autum" for instance is "los primeros amagos de otoño.... es como la iniciacion de una estacion, un nuevo estado....

amago o toque inicial me parece apropiado dado el contexto. Tambien podria ser: "primeros brotes culturales" like buds that flower or take shape.

Happy translating! ;o)
