Chasis: En un automóvil, bastidor o armazón que soporta su carrocería.

La opción que aporta la compañera me parece también correcta. Lo único que quizá en español y para el contexto en el que aparece (no va dirigido a un lector especializado), resulte más idiomático y natural utilizar bastidor.

Por ejemplo, imaginemos que un día me roban el coche. Como por imaginar no se paga, imaginemos también, que tras una impecable actuación policial, para lo cual también hay que tener mucha imaginación, detienen a los ladrones y la policía me comunica que cuando fueron pillados se disponían a borrar el número del bastidor del vehículo para venderlo en el mercado negro.
Y así me lo dirían, no me imagino a un policía diciéndome: mire usted, han intentado borrar el número de la estructura de soporte de su vehículo.
