English to Spanish translations [PRO]
Bus/Financial
English term or phrase: costs
"Analyze actual costs incurred by external purchases and/or activities consumed from other cost centers versus planned spending". I would like to know when I can translate "cost" as "costo" and when as "gasto" which is the more usual Spanish term. The client uses "centro de costo" for "cost center". I would very much appreciate any suitable explanation. Gracias.

I was having some difficulties with this not so straightforward translation, so I appreciated your straightforward explanation. Thanks also to everybody else who replied. Jesús

Explanation:

costo, gasto

Explanation:
Cost= amount of money that must be paid to acquire something; purchase price.
Expense=Expenses are calculated as the cost of goods and services used in the process of profit-directed business activities. In tax law, expenses are costs that are currently deductible, as opposed to Capital Expenditures, which may not be currently deducted but must be depreciated or amortized over the useful life of the property.

costo es mas preciso; gasto mas general

Explanation:
