First Definition. http://infoserv2.ita.doc.gov/ticwebsite/naftaweb.nsf/d705177... 1) What is a "Maquiladora"? A maquiladora is a Mexican corporation operating under a special customs regime which allows the corporation to temporarily import into Mexico duty-free, raw materials, equipment, machinery, replacement parts, and other items needed for the assembly or manufacture of finished goods for subsequent export.(1) Second Definition. http://209.67.253.180/enews/Issue/1997/05051997/pack050597.a... south of the border, The Cherry Corp. has established its own Maquiladora operation in Juarez, Mexico, conducted through a wholly owned subsidiary, Cherry de Mexico, S. A. de C.V. Prior to this, Cherry used the services of a contract assembler in the Juarez area. The new operation is housed in temporary facilities while a new 51,000 square-foot building is being constructed to Cherry's specifications in the Intermex Industrial Park. Third Definition. http://strategis.ic.gc.ca/SSG/dd79153e.html a) Maquiladora: This is an in-bond export assembler. These are normally established along the U.S.-Mexico border and are 100 percent foreign cap ital owned (mainly U.S.). The plants are devoted almo st exclusively to assembly and, in general, they do not incorporate purchasing departments. Duties are not paid on the components and, therefore, these imports are not normally reflected in the automotive trade balance. Maquiladoras export 100 percent of their production unless special permits are granted by SECOFI. Maquiladoras will lose their special tax status in 1999.
