English to Spanish translations [PRO] Bus/Financial
English term or phrase:subsistence farming and ranching
According to the U.S. Central Intelligence Agency, even though agriculture contributes only 4 percent to GNP, subsistence farming and ranching are the primary livelihood for nearly 80 percent of the population
"...pese a que la agricultura contribuye tan solo un 4 por ciento al PNB, la agricultura de subsistencia en granjas y ranchos constituye la principal fuente de ingresos para casi el 80 por ciento de la población".
Explanation: Farming is usually used to describe the agriculture component of the activity. Ranching is used to describe cattlemen activity even if it involves raising fodder crops and grain crops. Therefore, I'd suggest to use this combination to describe the two of them. The CIA is probably trying to describe a Third World country living under these conditions. I'm sure, it is not the United States. That's the economic profile prevailing in those countries. FAO is currently using these terms on its reports.
Explanation: This has come up before, but from Spanish to English. I can't remember who suggested the winning translation but artesanal was rendered as subsistence and applied to farming. It struck me as elegant. I wish I could say it was mine.
