English to Spanish translations [PRO] Cooking / Culinary
English term or phrase:tailings
Me pregunto si esto también es un error o existe:
Baked potato with herbs tailings
Boiled potatoes tailings
Ya busqué tailings por todos lados y no lo encuentro.....
Thank you so very much taña!!! this is so nice :)
im sorry i haven't been writing, ive been away for a few days. i am really
thankful you took the time to find this out for me. the translations sound
nice! (so you can grade in the dutch-english forum, i like Boiled new baby
potatoes and Pan-fried new baby potatoes with herbs).
hugs from Buenos Aires!
Boiled new potatoes
Boiled baby new potatoes (or can omit new)
If not pan fried, these tiny new potatoes can be boiled (and served with some melted butter)

There is a difference between new potatoes and baby new potatoes. I used to live in the U.S. and had a hard time finding the really tiny ones. In the Netherlands they are very popular.
On this website is one where you can see the difference in sizes: http://foodgang.com/potatoes.html
Gebakken krielaardappeltjes met kruiden
Roasted/Fried baby (new) potatoes with herbs
Another peer said: I would say 'pan fried'. (in butter of a mixture of butter and olive oil these tiny potatoes taste really good!)
Fried new potatoes with herbs
please taña don't worry, it's absolutely no problem, and you may want to better spend your time with the moving and all! :) :) :) i hope it's a pleasant one. good luck! and thanks for everything :) Vir.
Hey that's a great idea Taña!!! Gracias! :) I looked it up and the first one was: Gebakken krielaardappeltjes met kruiden
and the second one: Gekookte krielaardappeltjes
I suspect this will make me more mad at this translator already.... :)
@ Ace: Sure was! At least for me, I enjoy the research (the learning experience). As Virgina says, I wish I knew what the original (Dutch, I assume?) really said. @ Vir, if you want you can send me the original and I will have it checked? Abrazos.
I asked the Dutch-English translator what he meant, and he changed it to
Small Baked potato with herbs
Small boiled potatoes
I wish i knew Dutch to be able to tell what really says in there. People are so irresponsible!!! Translation can be the realm of arbitrary (don't know if that means anything in english....) :) Thanks a lot everyone!!!!!! :)
Vir: I see Noni was still looking for recipes and for what it is worth I found these for:

Reserve the peels from baked, raw, or boiled potatoes and cut them into 3 by 1 inch strips. Arrange the strips in one layer in a buttered baking dish, dot them with unsalted butter, using 1 tablespoon for each cup of peels, and sprinkle them with salt and pepper. Bake the peels in a preheated very hot oven (450 degrees) for 5 to 25 minutes, according to the type of peel, or until they are very crisp. (Baked peels cook in 5 to 7 minutes, raw peels cook in 15 to 20 minutes, and boiled peels cook in 20 to 25 minutes.) Transfer the peels to a basket, sprinkle with salt and pepper if desired, and serve as an hors d'oeuvre. Converted by MC_Buster. Recipe by: COOKING LIVE SHOW #CL9262 Converted by MM_Buster v2.0l.
Guys you are all so beautiful! but like I explained in the other posts, this is just some guy who translated a Dutch menu into English and I am so convinced now he didn't have the slightest clue. I have asked him to fix this "tailings" of his, but he hasn't come up with an answer yet. I promise to let you know. Thanks for everything!!!! :) :) :) Virginia.
I took a look at the menus for a couple of international US style restaurants. Foster's Hollywood was no help, but TGI Friday's has potato skins on a menu in English - but, frustration, I can't find a Spanish version, altho they are present in Spain....
Yes, but valid (English) proposal. As Vir says -- al original, pues../ask the English translator what he/she meant ... I believe you have helped enormously to decipher its true meaning. Up to Vir now ... SaludoZ.
When I used to work as a chef, making staff dinner was a dreaded responsibility that used to rotate from chef to chef on a daily basis. I used to deep fry all the off cuts from my potatoes and adding a bit of cajun spice- do deep-fried potato skins
Vir/Noni/Will: Just came across this entry. I don´t know whether the tail part relates to the steak or to the “herb”. I don´t know whether to laugh or cry. This is funny (please all forgive my weird sense of humour), we call “ganja” “herb/herbs”. Seriously, though, I believe that what they are referring to as “tailings” are “sprigs” (is that the word?) of say fresh herbs, e.g. thyme. http://www.peoriarestaurants.com/images/rest_pics/chateau_me...

Vir: Think nothing of it. I enjoy the research. Caution: I am not saying that "tailings" does not not exist. It may not be in common use (as Will pointed out). However, to make it understandable to your audience, yes, you may have to amend. De nada.
Agree w Taña that her first ref is not for us! Nor, imo are the topping and tailing ones - this is just part of the vegetable preparation process and not part of a recipe name. How frustrating that the only promising link won't open...
Muchísimas gracias Taña por tanto trabajo!!! El tema es que tiene que ser comprensible para los huéspedes del hotel y creo que tailings no lo es. Debo hacer corregir la traducción holandés-inglés. GRacias querida! Vir.
Vir-F: “tailings” doesn´t make ANY sense to me (but I am far from being an expert on the culinary front). I googled “boiled potatoes tailings” (or potato as Will pointed out) and came up with following link (CAT.INIST) which makes reference to tailings as the “residuos tratamiento” in connection with potatoes. Quote: Peeling removed 91-98% of the total residue; washing reduced residues by 33-47%. Detectable residues were found in boiled potatoes and the boiling water, and in french fries and the frying oil.
And the last link provided here deals with “topping and tailing vegetables”.
I’ll pass these links onto you with the hope that someone knowledgeable in this area can help you as I have no idea. I am very hesitant about sending the CAT.INIST link as it probably will throw you “off-course” , but did so with the hope that it offers some “clue” (IMHO, I don´t THINK SO, but I would be remiss if I didn´t!).
Will may also be onto something here with his suggestions that support Noni´s comment. Sorry, I could not help more…. However, as you stated … al original pues:/
Good, good luck! Taña

No existe, IMO! Al original otra vez, recomiendo! (Aunque en este caso, puedo imagar que se trata de "Topping", es decir, tipo guarnición. Ojo que boiled no es baked. Esto es patatas sin pelar al horno.
Automatic update in 00:
35 mins confidence:
tallos de hierbas/ piel de patata
Explanation: I don't think 'potato tailings' is common usage in English and anyhow it should read:
boiled potato tailings (with potato in singular).
I think these is refering to the skin of the potato
'Herb tailings' I've never heard of... It could refer to the stalks though.
So I would say it is not great English, but the above terms could be a solution.
