English term or phrase:With compliments
Hola a todos. Esotoy traduciendo algunas facturas y en una de ellas me aparece lo siguiente:
Balance due EUROS 5000
(Siguen los datos de la cuenta bancaria)
¿Qué quiere decir "with compliments"? Espero puedan ayudarme. Saludos!
Explanation: In the UK a compliments slip is quite common, it is simply a card (110 x 220 mm) with the company details, similar to headed letter paper, but with the mention « with compliments » in large print.
I do not know exactly how to translate this phrase, but in the UK a compliments slip is quite common, it is simply a card (110 x 220 mm) with the company details, similar to headed letter paper, but with the mention « with compliments » in large print. Does this give you a clue of what "With compliments" might be?
Jack: Please don’t hide your answer. Being misled, intentionally or not, by lack of context, a misspelled word, or an incompetent author are everyday facts of life for us translators. However wrong your answer may be or the reasons why you may have been so off the mark teaches us a lot about this common danger that we all face in every new translation. So even if you don’t get these four points, we all benefit from this experience. That is where the KudoZ forum really shines. Not just helping out a colleague, but helping us all as colleagues. Believe me, there is wisdom in your answer, even if it is wrong, let it stay!
I believe the original author is mimicking a phrase they saw somewhere, and didn’t really know how to use it. In the context now shown, it cannot easily be either compliment or complement. We are forced to guess the author’s intent and no amount of context can fix that kind of quandary.
