English term or phrase: tally marks
The term is used in the following context:
" I made tally marks to keep tracks of students' answers."
ijmiller
rayitas, marcas
Explanation:

marcas

Explanation:
A tally mark is a line, straight up and down, used to keep count of something (llevar la cuenta). A typical tally mark system would be to draw a short vertical line for the first four things to be kept count of, then a fifth line that crosses the first four. This system is repeated over and over. Then at the end, it is easy to count by fives (5 for each group) to get the total.

This is hard to describe in words, but go to the web site noted below, and look for the word "tally" - there is a good visual representation of making tally marks.

Hope this helps
