English term or phrase: restrain itself
I do not know how to translate this part:
With no rival, capitalism no longer had to retrain itself and allow widespread access to the growth of income and wealth. Capitalists began collecting it all for themselves.
I have written:
Sin rivales, el capitalismo ya no tenía que restringirse y permitiría el acceso generalizado al crecimiento de ingresos y riqueza. Los capitalistas comenzaron a acumular todo para ellos mismos.
Any suggestions?

refrenarse
Explanation:
I believe you are misunderstanding the context, it should be read as follows:
1)capitalism no longer had to restrain itself
and
2)capitalism no longer had to allow widespread access to the growth of income and wealth.

In other words, you cannot use "permitiría" otherwise it reads as saying that "it would allow it" and it is clear by the sentence that follows that is not the case " Capitalists began collecting it all for themselves". You must leave the second verb, just like the first, in the infinitive.
Hope this helps!

El capitalismo, al no tener rival, ya no tenía que refrenarse y [ya no tenía que] permitir el acceso masivo...etc.
