El término scavenger (carroñero) denota un ser (persona/animal) que recupera lo que otros han dejado atrás (ya sean objetos o su propio cadaver). Se ha apuntado previamente que scavenger=búsqueda del tesoro, aunque la equivalencia real sería scavenger hunt=búsqueda (o caza) del tesoro.
