Hi,

I need help with the term "proprietary" used in this context.... they are talking about IP addresses and how these are limited. I am torn between using "propietario" and "patentado" for "proprietary protocols". Anyone out there who can help me? Thank you!

Me suena más común escuchar "protocolos propietarios": son específicos de una marca en particular y que solo se pueden usar por esa marca. Y en cuanto a la segunda parte, se refiere a segmentos de direcciones disponibles en memoria (ver web de referencia).

En este caso, según tengo entendido, el término "propietary" se utiliza en contraposición al término "open" o "libre" en español, idependientemente de la patente, ya que un software o protocolo libre también puede estar patentado.

Aquí "propietary" más bien hace referencia a las restricciones sobre el protocolo, ya que, al ser privado, no permite que el usuario lo modifique.
