Explanation:
"Petitioner" casi siempre significa "recurrente", es decir, el que perdió el juicio y recurre o apela a un tribunal superior. "Petitioner" también puede significar "demandante", pero creo que sólo en pleitos de divorcio. Estos datos son para EE UU.

Just some other wording, to apply in other contexts since 'petition' can apply in very different actions; from a 'motion to quash' to a 'petition for review' or 'petition for habeas corpus relief' (the latter is an out-and-out lawsuit against very powerful officials). I drew these suggestions from the Javier Becerra bilingual legal dictionary, aimed at U.S. and Mexican legal usages. But our colleagues' suggestions are also found there for other legal actions.
