Or maybe Juan Jacob, may confirm its usage... or otherwise, deny it. * In checking "diccionario de argot" by Julia Sanmartín Sáez, saw that "perista" is in use in Spain apparently since 1896, but definitely not in use at this side of the pond.

Hi all, thank you for your comments.

It appears that there is no common single word in Mexico for this English term. As I said, the educated native Mexicans I asked had never seen the word "perista" and did not know any other term for this. They would just say "person who buys and sells stolen goods" as Juan Jacob has commented.

Francamente, no conozco más que "revendedor/reventa (de bienes robados").
Jamás he escuchado receptor, receptar ni perista (Eso será en España).

... could not tell me the word!

I asked 4 hotel clerks what they call a person who buys and sells stolen goods and they went around in circles and couldn't come up with an answer. One of them did a little research and came up with "perista" and two of them then said "nunca había escuchado esa palabra antes." Interesting.

(I should add that my Mexican experts are quite an educated bunch: one of them speaks English, German and Japanese in addition to her native language, the others are all "licenciados" in different fields as well.)

noun:"receptor" (de bienes robados)

Hi Lorena,

No! Hadn't seen it ... thanks. I looked under "law/patents" only.

I can't quite see (checking online) which of the two terms -- perista/reducidor -- would work best in Mexico. I guess the best course of action would be to go downstairs and ask the folks at the reception desk here (in La Paz, MX).

I'll post it after I see what they tell me :)
