El Presidente estadounidense convirtio en ley un controvertido proyecto que
impone sanciones penales a los que violen la ley de propiedad intelectual
sin intencion de lucrar. La ley (No Electronic Theft Act), aprobada por el
Congreso el mes pasado, estaba respaldada por las industrias de
entretenimiento y software, no asi por los grupos academicos y cientificos.

Conforme a la nueva ley, una persona que "intencionalmente" transgreda
material registrado por valor de U$S1.000 como minimo podria estar sujeto a juicio penal aun cuando no obtenga beneficio alguno. Segun la ley anterior,
los infractores no podian ser acusados de transgresion a menos que se
beneficiaran con ella. Los grupos de entretenimiento y software, tales como
la Alianza de Software Comercial, la Asociacion de Peliculas
Cinematograficas y la Asociacion de Editores Estadounidenses, dijeron que
esta nueva ley era esencial para proteger el software, las grabaciones
musicales y otros productos creativos facilmente pirateados via Internet.
