Explanation:
un abogado / defensor asignado por el tribunal sin costo para el acusado que no cuenta con recursos económicos para pagar su propio abogado, o que simplemente optar por utilizar los servicios gratuitos del mismo.

No se me ocurre otra cosa, ya que relief significa alivio, y lo más proximo que se me ocurre a defensor de alivio es Defensor de Pobres y Ausentes, que existe en todos los tribunales de la Argentina.

Rick: please check the translation of co-defendant in Louis Robbs' dictionary: it means exactly the opposite of what you stated. Co-defendant means codemandado, coencausado, coacusado.
In some cases Internet is not as reliable as the specialists.
