English term or phrase: public defender
Need the Mexican legal term for public defender. Must be the official Mexican term, please. I'm trying to translate the following phrase to Spanish:

You will be given the opportunity to talk with your attorney (or the public defender) before entering your plea.

(entering your plea?)

abogado defensor

Explanation:
I have always seen defensor de oficio (as found in Oxford Spanish Dictionary)

However, I did not find this term in any Mexican websites. I did find "abogado defensor" at the link written below. Hope this helps.

defensor fiscal

Explanation:
The public defender is an attorney appointed by the state, not just any defending attorney. The Universidad Nacional de Mexico (UNAM) was discussing this particular role last year, I believe... check out:

defensor publico

Explanation:
defensor publico is what Butterworth's gives.

abogado de oficio is what I have in various personal glossaries made up by agencies for their court interpreters

(neither is listed as specifically for Mexico)

.....there sure seem to be a lot of ways to say this!

fiscal / alegato

Explanation:
I've heard and read "fiscal" with reference to the public attorney even without "abogado" - but does the "fiscal" defend? A plea is often an "alegato." Just some additions to help you make a good choice.

Explanation:
