Se trata de un informe para acta en un caso de demanda de daños y perjuicios. Están describiendo la primera vista del caso, y dicen:

"After a number of prosecution witnesses had given evidence an application for a direction was made by the defence in the absence of the Jury that the evidence disclosed to date was not..."
Supongo que puede ser algo como, se solicitó que se pronunciara el juez (pues el jurado aún no estaba) y que dictaminase que no había pruebas suficientes como para....etc, etc.

¿Hay algún término, expresión exacta? El original es inglés británico.
