This name has been used in legal proceedings as a fictitious name to designate a party until his real name can be ascertained. Whenever this name is used it refers to an unknown or nonexistent person. For example: John Doe summons: a summons used when the defendant's name is unknown and which is therefore made out to john Doe. After the true name of the defendant is known, it is substituted.
