SEE EXPLANATION Explanation: Hi Deb! This is a bit tougher than it looks. If you check the translation for "annuity", it can mean [in Spanish] "anualidad", "renta vitalicia", etc. Also, "in lieu of" means "en vez de" or "en lugar de". I think the key words here are "purchase" and "policies" and that, to me, smacks of "insurance" rather than. Now I may be way off track but if I'm not, then I would suggest something like: "los demandados aceptaron [or, accedieron a]comprar pólizas de seguron en lugar de dinero en efectivo"...I'll leave it up to your enormous talents.
