Medical
English term or phrase: generic formulary drug
What does the word formulary mean? It is not in any of my regular dictionaries. I know what the other words mean, but I want to make sure I get formulary right in case its significant.
Thanks!

Spanish translation:lista de mediamentos aprobados
Explanation:
With all due respect for my very talented colleagues, formulary is not a typo. A formulary is a list of medicines aproved by a hospital, clinic, insurance company, HMO, etc. Patients may not have access to medicines that are not on their provider's formulary, or they may have tp pay full price.
I hope this helps!

Fármacos de Fórmula Genérica

Explanation:

Careful with the word order

Explanation:
Please, you need to be careful with the word order. The translation you have made should be from the English: "Generic drug formulary", and not "generic formulary drug". Make sure it is correct, please, it may mean: medicamente de formula generica".

Are you SURE it's generic formulary drug?

Explanation:
The reason I ask is because the medical plan I'm covered under provides prescription coverage and there are three types of drugs: brand name, formulary, and generic -- from highest to lowest priced co-payment. For the life of me I can't find the literature that explains the difference. I'll keep looking, though and post here if I find anything.

"Producto farmacéutico genérico"

Al least in Chile, this is how I have seen it used and apparently everybody knows what it is we are talking about.

Recetario magistral

Explanation:
In Chile, the correct terminology is recetario magistral, which includes a series of products (generic and brand name) approved by the ISAPRES (Health insurance companies) it is modified periodically by the Ministry of Health.

In the US, generic formulary drug is the chemical formula which makes up a particular product, and which can be manufactured and prescribed as such once the original laboratory's pattent has expired (ie. Valium can now be prescribe as diazepam).

This is not to be confused with an HMO's formulary, whcih is similar to the Chilean Recetario Magistral, that is, a list of generic and non-generic drugs approved by the HMO for issuance w/o additional copayment.

Hope it helps,

Ricardo Martinez de la Torre R., M.H.A.
