English term or phrase: Primary Care Provider

What is a Primary Care Provider?

A primary care provider is the doctor or nurse practitioner who provides you with comprehensive medical care. He or she conducts your regular physical exams and takes care of your health care needs. Primary care providers are usually those health care professionals working in family practice, general medicine, internal medicine, and pediatrics. When necessary, your primary care provider refers you to a specialist for further examination and treatment.
