I know "la intoxicación alimenticia" and the very technical "la salmonela", but they sound SO formal. Any other ideas? I'm a medical interpreter and almost every time when I tell the patient "intoxicación alimenticia", I get confused looks until I tell them that they ate bad food!

Explanation: Telephone interpreting, patient complained of "intoxicación". When I asked if it was "intoxicación alimenticia" there was a silence as if to say "Is there any other?" Maybe they thought I suspected them of the other "intoxicación", being drunk!
"intoxicación alimenticia" seems to be OK if you believe the Revista Biomédica of Yucatán, but that may be regional.
intoxicación alimentaria or intoxicación por alimentos en mal estado
Explanation: These expressions are not too formal. But I would never use "alimenticia", because "alimenticio/a" is a positive quality of food (equivalent to nutritive)while "alimentario/a" is used as for things relating to food. It's a very common mistake though.
