A Smyth-sewn soft cover book is a hybrid of two different types of binding: case binding and perfect binding. Text signatures are folded and collated after printing, then run through the same Smyth sewing machines used for hard cover books. This ingenious machine sews through the spine fold of each signature with a strong nylon thread. This process creates an extremely strong, flexible text "block" that binds into the cover as a single unit."
